Feel the Bunnyness~
Hello! Fakhra’s here. I hope everyone’s having a very bunniful holiday. We certainly are, and we’ve got an update for you.
So, what is our game? The conceptually titled Hop Hop Away, *previously titled Very Berry Bunnies, based on a targeted testing, the new title was received better* is about the abused bunnies living in the EVOL circus. They’re the second generation of born and bred bunnies in the circus. And now they’re getting help from a special friend, who’s laid out special treats for the bunnies to nomnom, and the players will help the bunnies escape this circus and take them through a journey, to different environments, to get to the Happy Farm, away from the cruel ringmaster. They’ll need to solve each level’s puzzle and utilize the game’s mechanics to cheer up the bunnies in their journey the best way they can, in a 2-dimensional world.
It’s time to meet Hop Hop Away‘s star bunny.
The bunnies went through a few concept-ing stages to reach its final look. Here are the first panel of sketches. And a shout out to our awesome character designer, Shihab, who brought the bunnies to life.
So, I suppose you’re noticing the trend of big eyes and fluffy tail and ears. The reason for that is, since the bunny avatar will be on the small side. I wanted the players to relate to the character despite its small size in the game level. Therefore, having big eyes, wonky ears and fluffy tail could make that happen. And the following is a version of the bunny that we had in our game for months, the runner up.
Due to how I designed the levels layout, a more square-ish look for the bunny fitted better. And a new round concepts were done, now that we had a pretty good idea of what we wanted, I asked Shihab to add the abused look on the bunnies. We’ll tell you more about how the abused look is worked into the game in a later post. The addition of the eyebrow was done to communicate the emotions of the bunny better. Having the player empathize with the bunnies is a really key element.
And from that, we had our bunny. Here’s it with different looks.
And here’s the final look of Hop Hop Away bunny, and in various poses.
That is all for how our bunny came to be. In the coming weeks, we’ll be doing more updates. Perhaps some GIFs of the bunny’s animation. If you’re curious about something, let us know. And we may include it in our next update.
